Ingredients & substitutions

  • Bread: We love to make this recipe with sliced brioche. It’s slightly sweet and it’s soft texture soaks up the egg and milk mix well.
  • Eggs: Bread slices are dipped in beaten eggs so that when they cook in the air fryer they form a perfect crisp.
  • Milk: You can use any type of milk to make this recipe. 2% dairy works great, or a plant-based milk like unsweetened almond milk or oat milk works great.
  • Seasonings: Vanilla extract, cinnamon and salt.

Tips for air frying french toast

  1. Don’t over soak the bread. Brioche has a soft texture and will soak up the custard mixture quickly. If you over soak it, it can start to fall apart.
  2. Line your air fryer basket with parchment paper. If your bread is a little soggy, you can line the basket with a piece of parchment to stop the liquid from making a mess in the bottom. The air fryer pictured here did not need parchment paper. Some comments below still experienced sticking with the parchment paper, so you can spray the paper with cooking spray for extra assurance too.

Also, another tip from the comments by the lovely Kristina is not to put the parchment paper in to preheat. You want to preheat and then carefully place the parchment paper in the basket, spray it and place the french toast on top. This will prevent the parchment paper from catching on fire. Parchment is safe to use in the air fryer as long as there is something holding it down. When it becomes free-floating, there is a risk of fire.
  1. Preheat your air fryer. If you don’t preheat your air fryer, the French toast sticks won’t cook through evenly and the middles can still be raw. If you don’t have a preheat function, let the air fryer run at 375F for 5 minutes before placing in the bread.
  2. Use a different bread. We love the richness and sweetness of brioche, but you can make this recipe with other sliced breads. If using a dense bread like sourdough you will need to soak it for a little longer in the egg mix.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to cook French toast in the air fryer?

Between 5 and 6 minutes at 375F works perfectly and results in a light and fluffy bite. Air fryer models can run slightly differently, so check at around 4 minutes.

Can you overlap the bread sticks?

For the best results, place the soaked pieces of bread in a single layer in the air fryer basket. This will ensure that they crisp up all over. You don’t need to flip the toast sticks during cooking.

How do you serve them?

We love to serve this with a dusting of powdered sugar and then some maple syrup of dipping. Serve along side some fresh fruits and berries, or go all out with some whipped cream.

  1. Thank you for this super easy and so delicious recipe! I preheated the air fryer and I used avacado oil spray on the parchment paper. I also turned the sticks halfway through cooking. They turned out perfect. This is a keeper recipe.

  2. Amazing I had been deep frying mine but kept looking for a better way thank you these are wonderful

  3. Smelt good! But man did they stick! My husband wasn’t too happy cleaning the air fryer.
Unfortunately won’t be doing this in the air fryer again 😞 in the pan sure!

    1. Oh, no! I am sorry to hear that. Did you try lining the bottom with parchment paper? I will dig deeper into this problem and see what’s happening. Please tell your husband I am sorry for the extra cleanup work!

  4. Great recipe! If you are using a dryer or more dense bread, try to leave the slices in the wet mix a bit longer to soak up the good stuff. The ones I let sit in the bowl for a few minutes, turned out way fluffier and better than the ones I only gave heave dip. Dryer, denser bread may require more wet mix than this recipe calls for. But either way my son loved them. Thank you!

  5. I won’t use the air fryer for French toast again. Stuck terribly to the pan and peeled off the cooked part, leaving behind toast that was cooked perfectly on one side and soggy on the other. Recipe makes it sound like parchment paper is optional (and flammable, according to comments) and doesn’t mention sharing with oil. I’ll go traditional with a pan next time. Oh, the flavor was great, btw—nice recipe for the batter.

    1. It is not flammable under 425. Is it possible you are thinking of wax paper? Parchment paper is completely safe to use and there are some specifically made for the air fryer.

  6. I just did this and laid down parchment paper. My air fryer caught fire 🤦🏼‍♀️ So be careful putting it in certain air fryers.

      1. I used parchment paper on my first batch and they stuck badly. I used the silicone mat made for air fryers on my 2nd batch and no sticking at all. I flipped them last 2 minutes to acquire more even toasting. 2nd batch was perfect. Parchment paper should probably be sprayed with oil first.

  7. Beyond delicious! My house smelled heavenly and the French toast was scrumptious. Hubby and I enjoyed every bite of it! I’ll definitely make it again. Thank you so much 🙂

  8. I didn’t have parchment paper so I sprayed the air fryer pan with two different types of cooking sprays. Each time the sticks stuck to the pan. 😢 Will they stick using parchment paper too?

    1. I’m not sure why that happened! It shouldn’t be the case, but let me know how it goes with the parchment paper.

    2. They will not stick to the parchment paper as long as you spray with non stick spray! Also do not put the paper in to pre heat air-fryer, preheat then place paper then french toast or the paper, or the paper will catch fire. its safe to use as long as you have something holding it down

      1. Great tip, Kristina, on not using the parchment paper during preheating! I am going to add it to the post, so more people see it! Thank you so much for commenting!
